Conversations on writing with women of color: Let's talk about Redeemer

Join Dorena Williamson as she talks with Redbud President, Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young, about her new Bible study

Join us for a special conversation with host Dorena Williamson, as they discuss Dorina’s newly released Bible study, Redeemer.

Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young (MFA, Hollins) is a writer, speaker, podcaster, and journalist. As the author of several Bible studies and devotionals including Create in Me a Heart of Mercy and Breathing Through Grief, Dorina frequently speaks at churches and retreats. She is also the author of several children’s books, including Cora Cooks Pancit and Chasing God’s Glory. A self-described foodie and an avid runner, Dorina lives in Central California with her husband Shawn and three daughters.

In this conversation, they discuss:

  • Dorina’s Publishing Journey: The connection began with discussions about children's books, but evolved into this Bible study project.

  • Redeemer Bible Study Focus: Explores the book of Ruth, emphasizing God's heart for the vulnerable (widows, orphans, immigrants, refugees, and the poor). Goes beyond the typical "love story" interpretation to reveal God as the true redeemer.

  • Providence vs. Luck: The conversation touches on how "just so happened" circumstances in Ruth's story (and Dorina’s own) reveal God's providential hand.

  • Multi-Modal Experience: The Bible study includes not only written content but also QR codes linking to video teachings by Dorina. These videos delve deeper into the story and offer personal takeaways.

  • Art and Journaling Component: Unique to this Bible study is the inclusion of original art by Octavia Mingerink and journaling prompts for reflection. This encourages a more sensory and contemplative engagement with the text. The art is a modern interpretation of the book of Ruth.

  • Dorina’s Personal Connection to Ruth's Story: Dorina shares how the book of Ruth became deeply personal after she was widowed at age 37. She found new meaning in the story of vulnerable women.

  • Call to Action: Dorina hopes the book helps people connect personally with the Redeemer and recognize God's ongoing care for the vulnerable.

Thanks for guiding us through the book of Ruth, Dorina! We are cheering you on!
