Collaborative effort: Taking cues from the trees

Conversation with Spiritual Life Director Darcy Wiley

We continue our monthly feature for The Redbud Hyphen. Redbud President Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young will be hosting conversations with writers, agents, editors and publishers about the intersection of culture, faith and writing. We hope you will enjoy listening in on these conversations and learning alongside us.

In this episode, host Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young welcomes Darcy Wiley, who is a trained spiritual director and serves on the board of directors for the Redbud Writers Guild. She coordinates spiritual care for our members and leads the Spiritual Life team.

In this conversation, they discuss:

  • Why spiritual direction and soul care are important for writers

  • How the guild values collaboration and celebration

  • How the trees are an intentional network created by God to communicate, care for each other, and collaborate

  • How members of Redbud Writers Guild embody the collaboration seen in nature

  • Tips for avoiding burnout and caring for your soul as a writer

Share in the comments any takeaways or highlights from this episode or questions about the guild.

What makes poetry distinctive from prose?

How can you engage poetry as a spiritual practice?

How do you hone your craft as a poet or even BEGIN to write poetry?

On February 27, join published MFA poet and former poetry editor Melanie Weldon-Soiset (@melaniewelsoi) to explore the answers to those questions and learn about poetry’s three superpowers: compression, containers, and concrete imagery.

In this webinar, Melanie will offer optional prompts for generating your own poetry drafts as well as provide time for questions and optional sharing. All experience levels are welcome! Bring your questions, hesitations, and curiosity!

This webinar is hosted by Redbud Writers Guild (@redbudwriters) and is free for all guild members. General admission is $15. All proceeds go to support Redbud’s Women of Color Mentoring Program.
